About Me

When I started my retirement travels in 2009, I wanted a way to share it with family and friends as it was happening. Hence, "My Travel Journal". However I realized I wouldn't always be on a trip and wondered what to do with the blog in between times. My daughter pointed out, wisely, that travels can also include trips to the kitchen to try a new recipe, trips to visit family, trips to my neighborhood Starbucks, or a fun day trip with a friend. You're welcome to join me on any of these journeys! I've set up individual pages for each of my major trips (see tabs above).

Also, I have an Etsy shop where my current needlework resides. The last pieces I posted here were in 2013! So if you'd like to see what I have accomplished recently, go to (and I apologize for having to copy and paste):

I recently added an "Italian Word a Day" thingie which shows up at the bottom of every page. You see the word and can click to hear it pronounced. I've been enjoying it and I think my accent is improving as time goes by.

And Then There Was Light...

in my half inch scale kitchen roombox, that is.  I had made a little list of things to do today in order to be as ready as possible for the coming week (mainly go wander around Lowe's and Home Depot one more time).  But after my tea, newspaper, and crossword puzzle at Starbucks (and discovering that it was an hour earlier than I thought - oops!), I decided to heck with that, I'm just not going to have anything to do with the vanity today.

Instead I decided I would be brave and try and get the light fixed in that roombox.  It's been hanging on the wall in my kitchen with all the accessories stuffed inside, all the tweezers, etc., on the counter below, and me looking at it every day and thinking "if I couldn't do it before, I won't be able to do it now".  But today I thought "well, okay, what have I got to lose?"

So, I rigged up my big magnifying lamp to see where it was I was supposed to put insert the lightbulb wires and just slid it right in there like I was a pro or something and it lit up!  Hooray!  Then I went ahead and set up all the things I have for it so far, using that blu-tak type stuff except mine is white.  I had more trouble with that than with the light cause it is all so tiny and my hands have gotten so shaky.  But it's back in place now and to celebrate, I took the protective film off the acrylic front.  I still need to add stuff to it.  I want probably an upper and a lower cabinet on the bare wall in the kitchen - maybe I'll order that tomorrow in the midst of getting my real-life vanity cabinet.  Bet it will be a whole lot easier. :)  And I want to make little placemats and maybe seat cushions for the chairs, but who knows when that will happen.  I should stitch some kind of tiny sampler too...

Then I went to the opening of the annual miniature art exhibit in the Renaissance Art Gallery here in Huntington.  It's my favorite exhibit of the year and each year just seems to get better and better.  Enjoyed that, and came home and ironed 4 shirts - I've ended up doing a bunch of laundry cause I just felt like all my clothes had spackle dust in them even though I had covered them all.

Didn't take any pictures of the shirts (tee hee) but here is a picture of the lit-up kitchen roombox back where it belongs and waiting for a little more decorating.

And, Wilbur, I am content. :)

I just love your little kitchen! Congrats on fixing the light. I know what you mean about shaky hands I have them too (hypoglycemia). Probably why I will never do anything smaller than 1 inche.

Your kitchen looks great, I am glad something went easy for you this weekend. I hope by the end of this week that all your vanity troubles are over.

Probably an excellent idea to just "walk away" from the vanity diaries for a bit ;) The room box looks great with the lights, but yes, I think you need a sampler or something else, to go on the walls, plus the cabinets you mentioned. Are those sailboats painted on the chest at the left? I like the bits of vegetables here and there...

I'm getting so excited to see all your treasures in person and it sounds like the miniature exhibit will still be there when I am so we can see it too? Have I ever been to that art gallery? Hope all goes well today with the vanity saga -- would sure be nice if the one from 84 Lumber showed up AND that you like it, etc. Keep me posted. xoxo

Thanks, everyone! Looking at the picture, I think maybe I should have made the dividing partition go all the way up to the ceiling, but then the kitchen would have been sort of like a prison cell, I think.

And, ta-da!! The vanity is at 84 Lumber here in Htgn! I'm hoping it's unassembled like they told me when I first ordered it cause otherwise I'll have to figure out how to get it here unless they can do that for me today. But, then I buy a piece of wood for the back, buy a new 8" center faucet, and wait for the plumber tomorrow!!

And, Chinch - the exhibit will still be here so I've put that on the agenda. :)

How neat to have comments from South Africa (Elga) and Amsterdam (Elly)! They're both members of the Yahoo petitpointers group and since it's such a friendly group, one begins to feel like one has friends all over the world.

Very nice, but i have to say that is the neatest, cleanest kitchen I've ever seen. More knick knacks, more art, more stuff needed. ha!
