About Me

When I started my retirement travels in 2009, I wanted a way to share it with family and friends as it was happening. Hence, "My Travel Journal". However I realized I wouldn't always be on a trip and wondered what to do with the blog in between times. My daughter pointed out, wisely, that travels can also include trips to the kitchen to try a new recipe, trips to visit family, trips to my neighborhood Starbucks, or a fun day trip with a friend. You're welcome to join me on any of these journeys! I've set up individual pages for each of my major trips (see tabs above).

Also, I have an Etsy shop where my current needlework resides. The last pieces I posted here were in 2013! So if you'd like to see what I have accomplished recently, go to (and I apologize for having to copy and paste):

I recently added an "Italian Word a Day" thingie which shows up at the bottom of every page. You see the word and can click to hear it pronounced. I've been enjoying it and I think my accent is improving as time goes by.

P.S. to Tuesday

For one thing, once again I made a little video and forgot to post the link and before I forget again, it is HERE   It was an attempt to give some idea of the scope of things when you're in a place like this.  I stood in one spot and just twisted my body from one side around to the other - didn't move my feet at all.  So I don't know how many degrees that is, but just imagine 360 degrees of it!  The video is really pretty bad cause in this particular instance for most of my turn I had no idea what was in the frame.  I kept worrying I was going too low or too high or whatever so there is some up and down ... but it basically does what I wanted it to do.   You can hear some French at the end too. :)

And I also wanted to mention a very nice part of yesterday and the post was already too long and I was too tired.  When I got on the bus to Eze, there was standing room only - not a crush - just 5 or 6 of us standing, so I went back to stand in this little "cove" place where I didn't have to be in the aisle.  I was standing in front of a couple and the man started to get up to offer me his seat.  I said non, non and motioned to him and his wife indicating they were together and he said in his very English accent "no, that's fine".  So I sat down and it turned out that he and his wife and the couple sitting behind them were all traveling together and were on their way to Eze also.  We just chatted up a storm all the way up while gawking out the windows as the view got more and more spectacular.  They live in Bath and I knew a little bit about that, they wanted to know where I lived and knew nothing about West Virginia, of course, but had been to NY and I think the other couple had been to CA.  They really were impressed with the fact that to go from NY to CA was as long as going from Britain to NY.  So it was just real pleasant.  And then, of course, the whole time I was wandering around Eze, we would run into each other and that was nice also, although I did begin to worry they'd think I was following them!

Oh, and there was an elderly (I know, I know, I'm elderly, but by that I mean older than I am) couple up at the very top and they both had on lavender shirts and white, white hair and when I saw them they were sitting on the bench in front of the lavender flowerbed right in front of that high wall.  They just looked so "pretty" that I approached them, they spoke English also, and I told them how nice they looked in front of the flowers and would they like me to take a picture of them.  And they decided, yes, they would.  So I did and that was nice too.

And one other thing I meant to mention at some point in my posts, is that about three times now people have stopped me and asked for help figuring how to get to where they want to go.  That happened sometimes in Italy also and it tickles me cause, of course, I so often have no clue!!  I don't know what makes them choose me although, of course, I suppose the people I try to ask for help don't know what makes me choose them either...  The other day an Asian girl stopped me to ask if I knew where "the Asian market" was and I said in stunned surprise "I do!" cause Chantal had told me about it, the Italian market, and the just plain market that are all in a row on a street.  So I told her where it was, and how she could get there from where we were, but she had a map that someone had marked the spot for the market for her, and unless there are two of them, it wasn't right.  But that made me unsure of myself so I said well, yes, if there was one on that street then she should just keep going straight.  But I checked later and I was right at least about the market I was thinking of.

And right now, that's all the things I can think of that I've wanted to share and forgot to. :)  Now it's time to get moving and, yippee, I don't have any yogurt which means I get to have another pastry and cup of tea for breakfast! (tee hee)

Tomorrow - bonjour to Nice and allo to gay Paree and hopefully my darling daughter...

You did far better than I did. When in Monaco, I said, no way. And turned around, went to Monte Carlo and made some money:)
Nice to have that time on the train now!
Hope the time in Paris is great! I'm so envious. The only city close to Paris IN THE WORLD (in my opinion) is Istanbul.
Fabulous you will be with your daughter!
