About Me

When I started my retirement travels in 2009, I wanted a way to share it with family and friends as it was happening. Hence, "My Travel Journal". However I realized I wouldn't always be on a trip and wondered what to do with the blog in between times. My daughter pointed out, wisely, that travels can also include trips to the kitchen to try a new recipe, trips to visit family, trips to my neighborhood Starbucks, or a fun day trip with a friend. You're welcome to join me on any of these journeys! I've set up individual pages for each of my major trips (see tabs above).

Also, I have an Etsy shop where my current needlework resides. The last pieces I posted here were in 2013! So if you'd like to see what I have accomplished recently, go to (and I apologize for having to copy and paste):

I recently added an "Italian Word a Day" thingie which shows up at the bottom of every page. You see the word and can click to hear it pronounced. I've been enjoying it and I think my accent is improving as time goes by.

My IT Souvenir from Italy

It just dawned on me as I sit here day after day waiting patiently for my new pasta maker to arrive, I've never followed up on all my talk about the souvenir I bought at the craft market while I was in Montefioralle.  This is the one where after my bold bargaining and getting the price reduced by 10E I ended up basically giving away 5E of that with my insane thought processes.

I took pictures tonight and they pretty much speak for themselves.  But I will explain that I love ceramics and pottery and I especially loved the totally unique work of this artisan.  Very rustic and loose and absolutely delightful.  There is some reason why everything he makes whistles but I couldn't figure that out from what the person translating was telling me.  Nor could I really understand what he told me it said on the back except that it is some kind of poem about home, I think?  Anyway, the little birds sitting on the top both are whistles and all three little heads hanging in the windows are whistles.  I didn't even know that when I bought it.  But it broke in half on its journey to the states and once I got home and worked up my nerve to try and glue it back together, I noticed every thing had little holes and, sure enough, they are all whistles.

I want to find someone who can read Italian (and kind of messy printing) to find out what it says.  I tried an on-line translator, but that was pretty much a bust, partly because I can't decipher some of the letters.

Now the pictures...

Kind of weird, but delightful I think...

Weird... I left a comment on this post days ago, and just noticed it never showed up here.
Anyway, I was just saying that I particularly like the elongated head that hangs in the tall narrow opening. I'll see Mas this weekend, and ask again if he has any ideas on the translation!

Mary Lynne, that souvenir is sure to be a conversation starter - how lovely it is! So unusual and fascinating. It's great. Sandra (sandrafromsydney)
