About Me

When I started my retirement travels in 2009, I wanted a way to share it with family and friends as it was happening. Hence, "My Travel Journal". However I realized I wouldn't always be on a trip and wondered what to do with the blog in between times. My daughter pointed out, wisely, that travels can also include trips to the kitchen to try a new recipe, trips to visit family, trips to my neighborhood Starbucks, or a fun day trip with a friend. You're welcome to join me on any of these journeys! I've set up individual pages for each of my major trips (see tabs above).

Also, I have an Etsy shop where my current needlework resides. The last pieces I posted here were in 2013! So if you'd like to see what I have accomplished recently, go to (and I apologize for having to copy and paste):

I recently added an "Italian Word a Day" thingie which shows up at the bottom of every page. You see the word and can click to hear it pronounced. I've been enjoying it and I think my accent is improving as time goes by.

Saturday - a travel day

Just a quick note to let you know I did get to Amsterdam and arrived to the minute as scheduled.  The Thalys train is really something else - fast, quiet, smooth and on time!

In Holland now and I saw two or three windmills - there's one in this picture which I was able to see in my editing program when I increased the size to 100% but even increasing this picture now to "original size", it's visible but not very. :)
One of the skinny houses on the canal so typical of Amsterdam.

Elga and Josje met me at the train station and got me to the tram which is where I was when I took the picture of the house above.  We got to my hotel which was a kind of bad beginning because we came into the "reception" area in the midst of some kind of heated altercation between two other guests(?) and the desk clerk.  It also had a kind of unprepossessing look and as we came in I had noticed a curving, very steep, and narrow set of stairs and had not noticed an elevator.  When it came my turn to check in, I asked about that and discovered that no, there was no elevator.  And with sinking heart asked what floor I was on? - the fourth floor.  So I moaned around about that a bit - did they have anything else - not really, etc., and said well, at least will you be able to carry my luggage up? and oh, yes they would do that.  So I left my luggage behind the desk and we three took off to find a bite to eat and then go find Elly's apartment.  It was early for dinner but we went to an Italian restaurant where Josje's husband joined us and I had a delicious ravioli dish.  Felt a lot better after that.  Then Josje and her husband dropped us off at Elly's and we visited there for a while and had the pleasure of seeing Elga's beautiful furniture work "up close and personal".  My blasted cold was still very much a problem and before too long I was burning up again (seems to be just a night-time thing) so walked back to the hotel and glory be!!!  They had changed me to a room on the first floor.  And not only that, but I was pleasantly surprised at the room itself based on my first impression of the hotel.  Very clean and very "Ikea" decor - a very large bed with pillows that weren't down-filled so they actually sat behind your back being pillows.  But again, just the down comforter - no sheet.  It was only about 8:30, but I took two little melatonin tablets Elly had given me, one of the big aspirins I bought in Paris, and a pain pill and crawled into bed.  Pretended I would work on this blog so was propped up with the netbook on my lap and, as I knew I would, went to sleep pretty immediately.  Woke up every 3 hours or so to cough for a bit but then back to sleep, so it was a pretty good night.

And the next day was the show!  I am going to do a post about that also but want to wait until I can take pictures of my little treasures.

So, I guess that makes this my last "official" travel post.  I've enjoyed hearing from those of you who have joined me along the way and just have to say that for the last few days, I find myself thinking about that trip "out west".  I think that's going to be next on my agenda. :)

Ah, already planning the next trip... good for you! :) Glad things worked out in the hotel, meeting up with your friends, etc. What a great trip it has been, following along!
I'll see you in what, maybe 9 or 10 hours now? (You probably won't get this posting even, until you're back at my place! Safe travels!)

OMG!!! Your cold, your woes -- I'll never worry about them again!!! Planning your trip out west before you're even home?!?!? In fact, I'm really happy for you. :) Hope your flight home and all goes smoothly and how nice that you got the ground floor room. xoxo

This has obviously been such a fantastic trip! I'm sorry that it ended with you not feeling well - it's so awful to be sick, especially when you are travelling. I enjoyed reading about your adventures and seeing your pictures. Hope your trip home was a good one, too! Chris mentioned he was picking you up at the airport yesterday, enjoy your visit with him!
